How to protect inkjet photo paper from fading

The images printed with inkjet photo paper, may be susceptible to fading from the exposure to air. In order to enhance the longevity of the inkjet printed images, it is important to know the factors that will influence the fading.

The factors that will influence the fading have many difference due to different photo paper. In a professional way, under the inkjet coating of microporous photo paper, there have a base layer of polyethylene. This means that the ink is absorbed into a very thin chemical layer, which is on top of the paper and not absorbed into the paper itself.

Instant dry (or Cast Coated) paper do not have the PE coating barrier between the paper and the ink, so the ink will be absorbed by the coating and some will leak into the paper. The result is that there is a higher concentration of ink on the surface of the microporous paper, it will take longer to be affected by UV light and will remain vibrant and colorful for longer time. On the other way, The ink used is a vital factor when considering the fade of inkjet printed images. There are two main categories, namely Dye Ink and Pigment Ink.

Generally, images printed with Dye Ink will fade more quickly than those printed with Pigment Ink dye to Dye Inks 100% liquid (essentially colored water/chemical combination) which is not sufficient to protect color from fading. Some Dye Ink will be better, but never can be as good as Pigment Ink.

Pigment inks contain solid particles which constitute the color and can be resistant to fading. Printed Images with Pigment Ink will last longer, especially Microporous Photo Paper. Of course, you should check your individual printer documentation to see whether it can take both inks or if it has already used Pigment Ink as the default.

In addition to above reasons, there may have no fading without the light. Where possible, inkjet images need to be displayed away from direct sun light and as far away from natural light as possible. So to keep your images vibrant and colorful for longer, please use a Microporous Photo Paper, Pigment Ink and a spray. Hang it away from sunlight and enjoy your years. The more of these parameters you can use, the longer the longevity of the print will be.
